@leahshomestead: Some of you asked what happens after salting the hides… so here we go. These rabbit hides were salted for a few days, then fleshed, and now they’re going into an alum tan. I used to think alum tanning wasn’t natural, but it’s actually been used for a very long time, and it’s one of the easiest ways to tan small hides at home. One thing people don’t realize is that temperature matters. If the hide gets too warm while it’s soaking, it can spoil and the fur can slip… so we keep ours in a cool place while it tans. We’re testing different methods this year — egg tan, bark tan, aloe tan, and alum — to see which one actually works the best on our homestead.
