I know people who pay someone else to raise and train their show animals and just pick them up before the show. He sounds so well rounded and is still highly involved in his projects.

When I showed a goat for 4-H one year, I kept him at a high schooler’s barn who also had goats. She fed them all in the morning and closed the barn at night, and I fed in the afternoon/evening — and of course I helped with the care and training stuff. If parents didn’t support 4-H projects at least a little bit, they wouldn’t get done!

Definitely not cheating and probably the best action to take. I went from a top student down to struggling with my grades because I put way to much time in with my ewes. If you don’t have help along with all the other activities it’s not fun anymore and makes you resent the project. Almost everyone wouldn’t be able to make it showing if parents, mentors and older kids didn’t show them the way and I really appreciate and admire how you guys share that journey because it is so hard to start with everything as a kid showing and a parent learning (at least that’s what my parents say lol)

a part of owning livestock is knowing when you need to have help. not being afraid to ask for it. a family member helping you out is not cheating.

In the winter I do most of my kids chicken chores. It’s literally dark when they get on the bus in the morning and they maybe have an hour after school if they don’t have an extracurricular activity. They are kids and can only do so much! I think it’s completely acceptable to help out.

Yeah, we also prioritize sleep in my house, even at the sacrifice sometimes of school/ sports/ hobbies/ responsibilities. So far my kids are doing really well overall and happy (12 and 9)

Nope. I had horses growing up. Just me. My dad fed mornings for me when I was young. Probably until high school. After that it was all on me. Obviously they helped when needed but those were my animas and I was responsible for them. I plan to raise my girls the same with their animals.

As a fellow 4-H mom with kids raising market poultry, it’s not cheating during the week to help him in the morning. I think you are spot on. 🥰

Part of learning all of this is learning how to delegate and how to use your support system and resources

How many shows are in a season? Is it work all season & go to "Big" show- then straight to market? I'm also curious as to how many months he will have had with the lambs before the first time he gets into a ring to show them?

This is absolutely normal in a good 4H or FFA program . To be honest , where cheating occurs in youth livestock competition. It's no where near "kept them fed" , it's a complete pro training program where the child involvement is show grounds only.

I’m the wife of an Ag teacher. You are exactly the kind of parent he loves. It’s so important that the parents are involved and can help hold the student accountable. It’s totally normal for parents to be involved in showing livestock. It’s a family affair!

absolutely not cheating, there are kids that do nothing barely see the animal and just take the halter at the ring, helping/teaching is absolutely necessary and the point

4h horse girls board at fullcare places and come ride once a week, coming from the 4h girl that took care of all their horses at her family’s farm. Give him all the help he needs. He’s obviously into it and you don’t want him to burn out.

I know plenty of kids who got assistance with certain chores. I will say the older they got though, the less help they got.

My dad fed my cattle in the mornings and when I was at my moms ofc but I also didn’t live on the property of my animals either they were 10-15 minutes away. But I showed 5 head of cattle by myself. 2 of them being a cow calf pair. I LOVED it. I’d go back and do it again and again
