Swamp Eels in a Mud Pot 🇨🇳🐍🐟 by 二叔公养鱼记 A fascinating traditional-style way of keeping Asian Swamp Eels (Monopterus albus) in China is to use large pots with soft mud, shallow water and emergent plants. The eels dig their own burrows into the mud, just as they do in rice fields, marshes and ditches in nature. When fed regularly at the same place, they quickly learn the routine and can become remarkably confident around their keeper, sometimes even taking food directly from the hand. A very good plant for this type of setup is Cyperus alternifolius. It loves permanently wet soil, develops a dense root system, provides shade and structure, and helps create a natural swamp-like microhabitat. Interestingly, well-established eels may show little motivation to leave such a pot because they have everything they need: a secure burrow, vegetation and a reliable food source.
