@darklens_30: 🇺🇸 Reno, Nevada, United States — September 16, 2011 During the Reno Air Races, tragedy struck when a modified North American P-51D Mustang known as “The Galloping Ghost” crashed into spectators. The aircraft was piloted by Jimmy Leeward, a 74-year-old real estate developer and former Hollywood stunt pilot. He was competing in a qualifying heat when the plane suddenly pitched upward, rolled inverted, and then plunged into the box-seat area in front of the grandstand. Leeward was killed in the crash along with ten spectators on the ground, while at least 69 others were injured, making it one of the most devastating airshow accidents in modern U.S. history. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board later determined that a failure of the elevator trim tab — caused by loose locknuts and a fatigue crack — triggered the loss of control. During the catastrophic malfunction, Leeward experienced forces of up to 17 Gs, which investigators believe likely left him incapacitated before the crash. The investigation also pointed to extensive and largely untested modifications made to the historic aircraft as a contributing factor. The 2011 Reno Air Races crash remains the third-deadliest airshow disaster in United States history, a tragic reminder of the risks involved in high-speed air racing. 🎥 Follow @darklens_30 for more dark true crime & shocking history like this. #viral #reels #History #aviation #fyp
