I can tell you the Managers are the last ones to know. Those decisions are made at the VP and Director level.

They aren’t lying. They often don’t know. The company wants to keep people calm/working, so the goal is to wait absolutely as long to tell people and only the moment they need to know. It’s not uncommon for managers themselves to find out 30minutes before telling their team. They are trying to limit rumors so they can control the narrative.

It’s above director level in big tech. Laying off people are mostly nothing personal so there’s no need for manager, sr manager, or director to be involved.

Sometimes managers truly don’t know. These decisions are made two or three levels above them.

These people are smart. Why don’t they either start their own business or help out small businesses. The only way we get through this is by helping each other.

Most of the time they don’t know. They’ll have done calibrations and put names in but they really don’t know because the decision is above their pay grade and often made by management consultants anyway

It’s true that the manager level does not know. this is typically at the exec level where they make these decisions in private

In my lifetime, I’ve only ever had one manager that let the entire team know that the company wasn’t headed in a good direction so that people could make their choices and prepare, p.s. it was a start up
