In the 1980s, he was sentenced to four years in prison for assaulting his partner’s two young children. After his release, he moved in with another woman who had a 10-month-old baby. The child was brutally abused and later died from the injuries. Johansson was sentenced to six years in prison for the crime. After being released again, Johansson started a kennel business with a new girlfriend. Through this, he met Birgitta Lönnhager and her fiancé. In early 2002, the couple moved into Johansson’s rural farm. Over the next three months, Birgitta was subjected to extreme and repeated torture. According to court records, she was beaten, stabbed, burned, and attacked with horse whips. Her arm was broken, and she was forced to sleep outside in freezing conditions. At times, attack dogs were allegedly used to intimidate and assault her. Birgitta and her fiancé attempted to escape several times but were reportedly caught each time. In May 2002, Birgitta died from her injuries. Johansson then forced her fiancé to burn her body inside their car and write a letter falsely confessing to the murder, claiming he intended to take his own life. Instead, the fiancé managed to contact authorities, leading to Johansson’s arrest. Following the investigation and trial, Kjell-Åke Johansson was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder.
