I was a Girl Scout leader. If they are selling the cookies themselves, they absolutely learn the names of the cookies at minimum. The GS Cookie program is supposed to teach the girls about business, selling things, and interacting with customers on a dollars and cents level.

I worked front end customer service... the machine tells you the change to give back... you just gotta count the money.... the money has numbers on it....

I’m a teacher and the inability to deal with discomfort is a huge problem. Productive struggle, not knowing the answer and being able to work through the problem, and dealing with being told no are vital life skills. I’m trying very hard to impress that upon my students and their parents but it’s uphill work in our instant gratification culture.

When I was a child, if I didn't know the definition of a word, my dad made me look it up first before he explained it to me.

Children are capable of SO much more than (most) people give them credit for. But if no one is providing them the tools to be capable….here we are.

The real trauma is going to be experiencing life with no resiliency, stress tolerance, or resourcefulness. I struggle with some of these, and overcoming it as an adult is really hard. It’s not a kindness to deprive your kids of responsibility, the opportunity to learn, to build intrinsic motivation and good executive functioning skills.

That's the whole point of the girls selling the cookies- to learn entrepreneurial skills.

I was a girl guide and the whole point of selling the cookies was to develop a life skill? We had to learn about them and market them properly.

Selling Girl Scout cookies used to require you to know things, you had to go door to door, it was real work but real lessons.

as a parent of two, "I don't know." is not an acceptable response when they have the means to have an actual answer!

We used to spend time learning about the cookies, which were low fat, and the highest sellers. That's just weird that they wouldn't know.

as a former girl scout, to this day i’m most confident about my 7s times table because when i sold cookies they were $3.50, so even multiples of cookies was just multiples of 7, i knew those numbers like the back of my hand as an 8 year old

The way they glitch when you get a total like $15.65 and you give them $20.65 instead of just a $20 😂 they always try and tell me they don’t need the extra change

I am in Canada so we have fewer varieties, but my 9 year old Guides can manage the entire transaction, including totalling multiple boxes, making change, and using Square for card transactions. I am really superfluous in the whole transaction

One of my students is a high school senior currently applying for jobs and they’re nervous about cashier work because they don’t know what the coins are. I am printing out coin flashcards for English class.

someone in my neighborhood set up a website for selling girl scout cookies for their kid. completely removing the human interaction and parents just texted out the link in parent text groups. I bought cookies from the scouts set up in front of the store because it felt like ordering online was missing the point.
