@gigithefacilitator: You weren’t born knowing how to regulate emotions. You learned it through co-regulation with your caregivers. If they couldn’t regulate themselves, they couldn’t teach you. When you can’t calm yourself down, it’s not a character flaw. Your nervous system was never taught how to return to baseline after stress. Suppressing emotions doesn’t make them disappear. It stores them in your body. Unprocessed emotion becomes chronic tension, pain, and dysregulation. You can’t regulate your way out of dysregulation using the same brain state that caused it. Your prefrontal cortex goes offline during stress. You have to regulate the body first. When you go numb or dissociate, your nervous system isn’t broken. It’s protecting you from overwhelm the only way it knows how. Emotional regulation isn’t about control. It’s about building the capacity to feel without being consumed. That capacity can be learned at any age. If you struggle to regulate, it’s not weakness. It’s evidence that the people who were supposed to teach you didn’t have the tools themselves. #emotionalregulation #coregulation #neuroscience #nervoussystem #trauma
