I feel like it belittles the genre of romance as well. Romance CAN be complex and have beautiful prose and well developed characters. Writing in general is a craft and it can be refined especially through criticism but when we lower the bar and dismiss criticism it devalues the ART form that is literature.

As someone who enjoys the genres that "tiktok books" fall under, it has MASSIVELY caused a drop in quality. It's much more difficult to find well-written books in these genres than it used to be.

yes! romance and smut books used to be genres I really enjoyed, and I still do but ever since booktok marketing started becoming a thing, it seems like publishers are completely discarding editing revisions, publishing stories that read more like a first draft rather than a complete narrative. I find it really hard these days to find a romance book I actually like.

reviewers should be leaving critical reviews. reviewers shouldn't be on the promo teams. authors shouldn't be calling people out for 3 star reviews. Bring back critical reviews that aren't sales tactics and this problem will (somewhat) police itself.

I think the main point is what you said about humiliation. They don’t want to retaliate from it because they feel like is a personal attack and that’s the issue. Until people see that it also affects them and it’s nothing personal nothing will change
