Real etiquette keeps your company comfortable. At a formal seated dinner, if a guest grabbed a drink from the left rather than the right, it would be more suitable to do as your guest than to correct them.

In line at the airport I was chatting with this mom and her preteen daughter, who was sitting on her suitcase. It collapsed under her and she fell, then started crying from embarrassment. I leaned over and said “girl don’t worry, I peed my pants at six flags last year and I’m 30 years old.” She immediately stopped crying and started giggling lol

I feel the same way about when clearly unfunny people are trying to make quite hearted jokes and clearly nobody in the group is reacting, so I try to laugh and interact so they don’t feel so bad

I had a lecturer refer to this as a Social Ambulance! You are rescuing them socially and from emotional pain, and in the process helping to keep the social situation moving forwards smoothly. It helps the person who made a "mistake" most but it benefits everyone by keeping the conversation or activity moving, and creating a vibe where it's okay in this group to have an awkward moment because you know you can move forwards from it without rejection. Helps everyone be more open and authentic :)

not really social faux pas but i have a lot of instances at work where someone does something they think is embarrassing or something and i always try to reassure people no matter what it is. i’m at work so i’ll be here regardless, waste my time or mess up all you want i don’t mind at all!!!

people get so mad at mistakes and I really wish people held other humans with more grace.

I bend over backwards to do this, but operate under the assumption and reality that people don’t do that for me.

I love those people so much!! Reading the room is such an important skill. And especially if they do is seamlessly. Like nobody even noticed what happened. I do it all the time bc of previous embarrassments, but I don’t have the effortless skill that others do. It’s like Fi vs Fe (natural innate skill at it)

I always think about that time that Queen Elizabeth had a foreign guest over who started drinking out of a finger cleaning bowl because he mistook it for a drinking bowl, and instead of correcting him or letting him continue on his own she started doing the same thing to avoid him being the only one

Yes!! I’m a manager at a coffee hut, and when I’m training people if they mess up I ALWAYS say “oh don’t worry I’ve done that so many times” it really helps them feel comfortable and not embarrassed

i feel like that’s a level 2 social skill, like it feels like the obvious and intuitive move to make and i say this as someone who is socially awkward. i find it sad that action isn’t muscle memory

Yesssss, and then you get people who straight up highlight the mistake. I don't understand that behaviour at all.

I've always thought about this as like the 'safety' of a conversation. like you can maintain comfort so everyone feels more safe to be themselves, by offering vulnerability first, being quick to smooth things over, keeping things lighthearted. it keeps the conversation safe and inviting
