You have to make the effort, not them. You should have the translator or stay close to staff . I’ve been in Japan and everyone was wonderful and helpful
Nobody spoke Japanese to me in US in spite of I’m a Japanese, I know the feeling.

i don't know where you are from but when traveling it is advised to know at least some words in the native or most used language in the country. to expect someone automatically knows your language is a bit rude. technology can help you a lot to avoid these unpleasant misunderstandings.

I don’t think that’s racism. In Japanese places where you get numbers, I have never heard them call numbers in English. In a lot of offices and such, the systems are automated so machines will announce the numbers, in Japanese of course.
