How many inmates were in the prison you used work at? And how many officers on staff? What was the inmates to officer ratio? I enjoy your stories and your point of view as an officer. Thanks for sharing.

I’m former NHS and a work environment like that there would be a minimum of “breakaway” training and depending on the role maybe control and restraint training.

As a prison nurse I can say not once was I ever without an officer and always felt safe your not allowed to go anywhere without an officer escorting you inside. I love being a nurse in a prison it’s a whole new world

Working as a nurse in corrections I definitely had 2 completely different experiences with officers. I did a couple years in a GEO facility that was great, they knew their shit and never left us alone with an inmate (medium). Then I worked a year in an Illinois state run intake facility (max) and it was a joke. I repeatedly had officers refuse to accompany to a cell and even stated, "I can't do anything if they attack you, but I guess I can hold the door." Only facility I was ever assaulted at was the state facility.

I don’t think I would want to work in any job without self defence training at a jail!

I tried messaging you. I just started as a CO and It’s alarming how much im hearing “but that’ll never come out” when talking about officer negligence or excessive use of force. Are all FDC jails like this? Please reach out.

Were there ever long stretches of time where fights / crazy things didn’t happen? Or was it something new and crazy everyday?

Nurses, doctors, registration & all of us hospital staff are taught a “Mandatory CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention).” It’s a in person training class required every year to train staff how to defend themselves without harming violent patients. In other words, all we’re allowed to do is put our hands up together, arms straight forward, and yell loudly “No! No! No!” while backing up to try to get into view of the security cameras and coworkers.
