@thegaze_: I love fart history. This He-Gassen scroll (“he” meaning fart and “gassen” meaning battle) is part of a broader Japanese tradition of fart battle art. Several scrolls like this exist, all from the Edo period. Some art historians read them as political satire: Japan was under growing pressure from Western powers to open its borders, and blowing them away may have been the point of these caricatures.
