I get what you’re trying to say about history and where the name “Bougainville” came from, and yes—that conversation matters. But at the same time, Bougainville today means so much more to the people who actually live there. The name may have come from outside, but the identity, the culture, the struggles, and the pride all come from within. That’s what truly defines it now. Focusing mainly on anger about the name feels a bit misplaced, especially when the Gospel is supposed to be at the center. The message of Christ is about truth, yes—but also about unity, growth, and transformation, not just stirring frustration or division. We can acknowledge history without letting it control how we feel or who we are. Bougainville belongs to its people now, in a much deeper way than just a name. The Gospel isn’t about stirring anger or division. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)
Let’s build, not divide.
