Grace KPA-CTP + dogs :
Predictable in this context isn’t about the dogs trained behavior. It’s about temperament that’s created by careful breeding, you cannot completely alter a dogs temperament with training. A sensitive dog will likely always be sensitive to some degree. When you know the personalities of two dogs breeding, you have a pretty good idea of the personality traits your dog from those parents will have. That’s predictable. This is not to say you cannot have a well tempered dog from a shelter and that you cannot train a dog to a high level from a shelter, but that is not “predictable”

So i actually think in some ways shelter dogs can be more predictable, particularly adult ones. With an adult dog they already have the size, coat and temperament they are going to have.

To me predictable means you have an idea of what the temperament will be from the get go. I couldn’t have predicted how my chihuahua from the shelter might have turned out because I never met her parents and the person who pulled her from the shelter couldn’t tell me anything about her personality. She is still a fantastic dog but her temperament was not predictable.

This made me wonder what exactly people mean by predictable? I feel like my rescue is incredibly predictable *to me* because I know him so well

I work as a dog behaviourist, I’d never advise the “average” owner to adopt unfortunately

Any dog can be trained if enough effort is put in. That being said if there is any dog that needs a home and you are opening your home to an animal that needs a loving home it shouldn’t matter where they came from!

Genetics are important, but environment and training also plays a role. I think the biggest thing is people becoming educated on dog behavior, breeds, reputable breeders, etc.

I adopted a shelter dog that I never met just saw a picture of during Covid. She’s been the best dog. My second dog I foster failed because I was looking for a dog that had specific characteristics before bringing into my home. Fostering is a wonderful way to learn about a dog before adopting.

i will never have a shelter dog. i don’t want one, i have very specific needs and wants from a dog, and a shelter dog is not it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is Canelo. We adopted him from a shelter a month ago. He was VERY quick to learn our daily structure. And has already been out and about the house with our two cats. He’s been the best. So so so glad we adopted him.

I don’t agree with ‘adopt, don’t shop.’ It should be adopt when you can, and shop responsibly when needed

I currently have a 8 month old rescue and 6 month old purebred rottie. My rescue is by far more intelligent, mild mannered, willing to learn and please you. My rottie is a good boy, but was much more difficult to train.

Me and my “unpredictable” shelter dog that wouldn’t even let me touch him the day I got him. Lots of training later and he’s still got some quirks but he’s predictable to me because I know him so well.

I want both. I absolutely adore shelter puppies. But for an allergy alert service dog I need more guarantees. My favorite pack setup is one SD and two pets. That way they don't get lonely or jealous when their brother is working. I'll always have a well-bred SD and two shelter puppies.

My rescue ranger came to me food insecure and with no training or manners. After a year of solid working with him he is the most gentle and loving boy around. He’s calm and patient, shares well and love to play with other senior dogs (he’s 10 now). Dogs are a result of their environment and humans.

Any dog becomes predictable through constant training and communication. Also a dog becomes predictable from just LEARNING how they function. Like having a new roommate 😂 I’ve met so SO many pure bred red goldens that act a FOOL and need to be trained. It’s just life

People just don’t understand the word predictability so often time misuse this term which is frustrating. It all exists on spectrum. I adopted my shelter dogs as puppies and they’re both seniors now, but some in DC would still refer to them as “unpredictable” to me, but I would argue I’ve gotten to know them pretty well over the last decade lol

well bred dogs are more predictable than shelter dogs, but right now, the realistic comparison is bought versus adopted, and bought isn’t reliably more predictable versus adopted.

My dog from a shelter has become pretty predictable in the dogs she’ll react to! She still has her moments but she’s gotten way better

My parents have two pure bred dogs, both are reactive and do not like people as well as have seizures. My shelter dog is a gentle giant who loves everyone.

I almost think dogs can be more predictable from a shelter…especially depending how long they’ve been at the shelter and how they’ve been cared for. Plus a dog will become predictable overtime regardless where you get the dog from.

Fostering a shelter dog is an amazing way to learn their temperament before committing to adoption. You save lives by fostering and might find your new fur baby. Win win 😊
