I genuinely believe our education system is missing something important.
We spend years preparing people for careers and academics, yet very little time is spent teaching healthy relationships, emotional intelligence, communication, boundaries, red flags, self-worth, and how to recognise emotionally healthy versus unhealthy behaviour.
So many of society’s struggles are deeply connected to relationships—heartbreak, loneliness, toxic dynamics, mental health struggles, family breakdowns, and emotional trauma.
Technology has changed relationships rapidly, but emotional education hasn’t evolved at the same pace.
Yes, I’m aware that Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) is now taught in schools in England, which is a positive step. However, having reviewed the syllabus, I believe these subjects need to be taught in far greater depth and treated as core life skills, not occasional topics. In my view, understanding relationships, communication, emotional wellbeing, and healthy behaviour should be as important as maths and English.
The same applies to modern dating. Many people blame dating apps and social media, but the technology itself isn’t necessarily the problem. We teach people how to drive a car before putting them on the road because without guidance there would be chaos and harm. Yet millions of people are navigating dating apps and social media without ever being taught how to communicate effectively, build genuine connection, ask meaningful questions, or recognise healthy and unhealthy behaviour. The tools evolved rapidly, but the education around them didn’t.
Relationships shape individuals, families, children, and future generations. Maybe it’s time we started treating emotional education as important too. 🙏🏾🤎
