Asuka Ayanami :
Asuka is a girl who suffers from an extreme inferiority complex and fear of abandonment. At first glance she may seem like a typical tsundere, but she is much more than that.
She is a kid deeply traumatized by her mother. When a part of her mother’s soul was taken by Evangelion Unit 2, her mother became unable to differentiate a doll from her own daughter.
When Asuka, who had just been told that she would be the one to pilot Eva Unit 2, ran to tell her mother in excitement, she instead found her hanging having committed a double suicide with the doll.
When she saw that, she thought to herself that she had to grow up immediately, to not get abandoned, and to prove that she is strong.
She built her entire identity around being the best Eva pilot.
Asuka is not arrogant because she thinks she is superior; she is arrogant because she cannot psychologically survive believing she is inferior.
She seeks praise, approval, and validation because she equates it with love and with her own existence. Her confident and prideful personality masks a deep fear of rejection and emotional vulnerability.
She is in a constant fear of not being special or valued. Because of this, she hides her weaknesses and never shows true vulnerability.
She uses narcissism as a shield.
She uses aggression, arrogance, and competitiveness as shields.
She also uses aggressive flirting and sexualized language as a way to feel desired.
When she and Shinji Ikari kiss in Episode 15, she is disappointed when Shinji does not react the way she wanted. This highlights her need for emotional affirmation.
There are more scenes like this, but it would make this way too long.
