Forgiveness and understanding is so much easier when it’s for us, when we’ve made a mistake or while learning. For some reason, it’s more challenging when we’ve been hurt by others. We assume they did it intentionally or maliciously (maybe they did), and we expect them to know that and feel bad enough to apologize. Or for them to explain why they did it so we can understand (so we can make them understand why it was wrong.. and expect an apology out of that). It may never happen and no matter how hard we try, it’s out of our control. Sometimes the people are still around, and we feel we can make that conversation happen. Other times people have passed or moved on, and we’re still feeling the feelings around it. When we cannot accept the person and situation for what it is, hoping for it to have been any other way before, now, or in the future, we’re causing our own suffering. As we hold onto a negative experience with aversion, wishing it never happened, or hoping for a different outcome through the words and actions of another, we’re choosing to hold on to a hot ball of iron, or willingly drink poison and make ourselves sick. When we can accept the negative experience, not as something we wanted, but as something that just happened, we allow for the opportunity to process it differently. It’s the first step in having a truly different outcome by putting control back into our thoughts, words, and actions.
