I came across a video from Seun Winde over on the other app and it really made me think. He spoke about how men are often encouraged to own things, build businesses and invest, while women are constantly marketed products to consume. It prompted me to look into the Irish data to see if there was any evidence of a gender gap in investing, and what I found was really interesting. According to the Central Bank of Ireland, women account for just 33% of Irish investors, while men make up 66%. The research also found that women are significantly less likely to invest than men. That is a huge gap, and it raises an important question about why so many women are missing out on long term wealth building. The study suggests there is no single reason. Women who were not investing were more likely to say investing felt too complex. They were also more likely to have lower confidence in their investment knowledge and lower willingness to take financial risk. On top of that, factors such as income, education and financial literacy all play an important role in whether someone starts investing. I also think it is worth reflecting on the messages we consume every day. Social media is full of content encouraging women to buy more, upgrade more and spend more. Of course that is not the only reason behind the investment gap, but I would love to see just as much content encouraging women to learn about investing, build wealth and think about their financial future. If this page can help make investing feel a little less intimidating, then I am happy. We need more conversations about building assets, creating long term financial security and helping more women feel confident putting their money to work. Small steps taken consistently can have a huge impact over time.
