the screenwriter actually did an interview about this, she said "I believed that if this story had any villain, it would have to be Mi-rae's own fear. Of course, advancements in Al and technology in general could jeopardize relationships, but fear is the biggest obstacle we have to overcome in life." if u want to read it, its an elle interview

the fear of relationships and of change !!! this is why the drama is so much deeper than what it markets itself to be. esp the last lines?? “Love is dangerous, relationships are even more dangerous. But thats okay ‘cause its us.” ALSO “Thats how people are, we choose to set out on adventures despite knowing the risks” HELL YEAH????

I half agree. it does open a discussion about AI and a near future of corporations exploiting people's loneliness and concerns. but the main point is that AI here is used to represent something bigger: a dream, a false hope, a temporary illusion of happiness, an escapism route. and that's why her choosing real human connection and overcoming her fears in the end is profound. it's also interesting that they don't try to make it a moral lesson, which is clear with how they also showed two different approaches (the best friend and the author) without really condemning either.
