I love how he then flipped this to work against the audience having clarity in Kagemusha.

When I watched Ran a few years ago for the first time after mainly having watched like modern day blockbusters and the occasional fincher or tarentino film it was like seeing color for the first time. Such a rich color scheme that is maintained throughout that has not been matched to this day

The shot with the armies coming up over the hill in the distance is one of my favorite in all of film. You can tell he was a painter. The shots are perfectly composed. I just hated the shots in the opening of the movie outside in the grass.

I had to film a short film with a conversation between 3 people, had to be so careful with camera angles and positioning just to be sure it turns out decent, can’t imagine the effort on this 😭

He was absolutely rigorous with his painted storyboards which meant he had it all down before the camera even started rolling.

The geographical clarity is sooooo important and way too few people recognize it anymore, action just tends to happen in the infinite void of space now instead of an actual place

I watched Ran a couple months ago for the first time and was blown away, you simply don’t get scale like that in modern films
