It might surprise you to know that as a scholarship coach, the majority of the students and families I work with are not low income. They are middle income families. They often make too much on paper to qualify for Pell Grant and other need based aid, but they also do not have tens of thousands of dollars sitting in the bank to pay for college. 😞 If your family falls into that middle income category, here are three things you need to know. 👇🏾 1️⃣ Do not automatically skip scholarships that say applicants must demonstrate financial need. A lot of families see that phrase and move on. Sometimes scholarship committees simply want you to explain your financial situation in a paragraph or two. They may want to know what financial challenges your family is facing, what extenuating circumstances exist, or how receiving the scholarship would help support your educational goals. Do not assume they are only looking at household income. In many cases, they want context, so do not count yourself out before applying. 2️⃣ Do not rely solely on institutional aid. One of the biggest mistakes I see families make is putting all their hopes into scholarships offered by the college itself. Yes, those scholarships are great, but they are also highly competitive. If your entire strategy depends on receiving a large institutional award, you could be setting yourself up for disappointment. 3️⃣ Focus on low competition local scholarships. Many of the best local scholarships do not have strict income requirements at all. Instead, they may focus on things like GPA, test scores, community service, leadership, extracurricular involvement, or career goals. These scholarships are often overlooked, which means your student may have a much better chance of winning them!! If you or your student need help building a scholarship-winning strategy so they can graduate debt-free, comment WIN and let’s schedule a free 15 minute consultation to get them moving in the right direction. 🎉📅 #scholarships
