It used to be Kobolds! They’ve gotten more lizard like over the years but when Japan picked up dnd they kept the design more dog like. Dungeon Meshi has a great example of this

when it comes to dogs/vulpine I always make a kitsune teifling as you can make a teifling a kitsune because that race isn't tied to hell it's tied to any plane of being below earth. so yokai, furies and dragur are on the table to be a teifling as long as they have a working consciousness

Fun Fact: The D&D 3.5 book "Savage Species" had a web enhancement that illustrated how one could use the book to make their own character races - one of the examples was the Laika, the closest we get to an official canine player species.

In 3E “Dragon Compendium Vol 1”, you had the lupin, which were canids (based on wolves, I think), and they are definitely NOT shifters/lycanthropes…in fact they hated the latter either a vengeance…not sure what later editions may or may not have had

I homebrewed Wolfkin, which are both wolf and dog people. I believe I took inspiration from other homebrews but I gave them pack tactics as a species feature as well as a howl with similar mechanics to the Leonin's Roar

My party has a homebrew race called the “Reynard” from the old word for fox and it’s basically just a tabaxi but for Canines instead of Felines.

I made a biped dog race ages ago because I was annoyed at the lack of them in western Dnd, it only the narrative backbone of one though I don't have any stats built for them, and it's only on a subreddit where the point is that anyone can use anything on their to write whatever they like and can add whatever they want to the lore
