I was born in Russia, so I'm half Russian and half Italian. When I was little and barely fluent, we moved to Italy and gradually stopped speaking Russian much. As I grew up, everyone in my house knew how to speak Russian, but no one ever helped me learn. So I understand, but I can't speak.

I’m guilty of this , I speak and understand it my mother language but my boys 15,17 they understand the language but not speak it, I put my hands up, it my fault not speaking to them in my language 😬

😳 Do you understand the parents that speak to you in their mother tongue, yet don't expect a reply in said language, will accept replies in English... If you're never forced to speak the 2nd language, whilst subliminally you may know the language, your mind produces a mental block to stop you from speaking it from fear of uncertainty, practice, pronunciation, ridicule... It's a mental block that can be over come, but has to be forced.

My son is only 4 but he’s like this, my husband can speak to him in his language but our son responds in English

That’s so true today I met this lady she was saying a few words in Hindi and when I started talking in Urdu she was like sorry my Hindi isn’t great and continued in English i was like wtfffff

Are you fluent in understanding Arabic from reading the Quran or does it go over your head ? Not everyone processes languages the same. Some find it easy, others struggle.
