I always just bury them a bit deeper and add epsom salt and bone meal to the hole. Every year the base of the plant is like 3/4-1 thick. And they get over 6 feet tall. I’ll just keep doing it my way.

I use ollas in my raised beds and plant my tomatoes like this so the bottom roots are near the ollas.
