There is literally no nursing shortage. There has never been a shortage of nurses in the 29 years Ive been a nurse. Short staffed hospitals and unfilled open positions is not an indicator of a shortage of nurses. That's a management strategy and choice.

Agreed with all of this. I just would rather call it understaffing thannnursing shortage. These hospitals penny pintch and pay their CEOs by short staffing us constantly. I have a friend who’s been looking for her first RN job for 7 months. Places aren’t hiring just to save money at the cost of the patients care and our burnout.

It’s like they forget we are human too. I’m leaving the bedside because I’m fed up with it

I think another big problem too is that the public really has no idea what/all that we do. they really think the Dr's are doing all of the complicated things

Bedside drains the life out of you. I left bedside 5 years ago and will never go back.

Thank you for what you do. When my grandmother was dying, I brought all the nurses snacks and even brought a homemade cake for all of them just to say thanks for taking care of her (and I hoped it would get her extra attention) 🍰

I would have spent the time with the patient alone as well. And I thank you for spending that time with the patient. My dad was alone in the hospital some days and he had some of the best (and worst) nurses that would spend time with him. My family and the nurses were there for his final breaths but the room next to us was just like this, needing their nurse non stop. Nurse to nurse, thankful there are still good ones out there even when we are drained at the end of the day.

Felt like I was watching a video of myself talking. This is probably one of the most frustrating and hardest parts of being a nurse. I would have spent that time with that patient too. I feel you 😭🩷

And management makes it taboo to verbalize to the patients that we are understaffed. So now it just looks like I'm bad at time management to the patients. Which in turn leads to being berated. 🙄

People expect us to drop everything and be there for them immediately. If we only had one patient this would be possible

This scenario has happened to me so many times. It's exhausting being pulled in 5 directions at once and feeling unappreciated. Work feels like one interruption after another.
