@rayanngordon_: Evan Stark’s 2007 work on coercive control describes how fear and control are used over time to erode a person’s autonomy and sense of self. "Why didn't they just leave?" Is always asked by people who don't understand coercive control. When your spirit is weakened and your sense of self is worn down by an abuser, they weave an increasingly tight web that makes it harder and harder to leave. The threats people have to live with are terrifying: "I'll take the kids away" "I'll kill your family" "You will suffer terrible spiritual consequences" Getting out takes incredible strength and the more education and awareness of coercive control that's out there, the more we can help people finding their way back to freedom.
