@grandemikey: What’s the minimum threshold for saying you’ve actually “visited” a country and adding it to your tally… your country count, if you will? #travel #solotravel #adventure #uktravel
Airport stopovers where you don't leave the airport don't count. Anything else though, like what you did counts IMO.

if you leave the airport and have a meal outside of the airport is the theory I go off of

disagree, you can do day trips to some countries (eg. Monaco) without having to spend the night, and likewise you can spend the night in a country (on a layover) without seeing anything

If you had a pint in the country you went to the country 👍🏼

Lowest threshold - Actually getting out of the airport, train station etc and into the country. Doesn’t need to be overnight as people do go on extreme day trips abroad too. I’ve flown from London to Prague and Seville and gone back the same day. I count that as still visiting 😅

How can you count Vatican? Staying there overnight is ridiculous.

If you have physically been in the country, you have been to that country.

For the Traveller’s Century Club qualifications, you technically don’t even have to leave the plane/airport — now personally I think that’s stilly, but if you left the airport/bus and did something, even just a meal, it counts for me

I wouldn't say overnight as there are plenty of countries I've visited on day trips as they're so close to each other. For example I've done day trips to Monaco, San Marino, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg but would definitely count them. For me it's less concrete but it usually involves getting food and visiting a tourist site. I had a 9 hour layover in Helsinki and went on a walking tour, got food and visited a museum so I count that, as I definitely got to see lots.

So basically no one has actually been to the Vatican City then, I’m pretty sure there isn’t even a hotel there

Touched the ground there should count. Outside of the airport etc

i feel like you have to have *done* something in the country, even just like a meal or a coffee - like spending an hour somewhere walking around and taking pics counts 100x more than driving through for 4 hours and only seeing toilets/petrol stations - but that’s just me!!

definitely would not consider el salvador as a ‘visited country’ in this case, i would say you have to spend like AT LEAST 6 hours in a place to have enough time to really get to see the most important spots in a city, excluding places like maybe the vatican/monaco/etc. but yeah, wouldn’t count layovers where you don’t step out of the airport or just stopping at a gas station/rest stop on the way to somewhere else

Cruise ships generally only stop in a port for a day/half day so I reckon overnight is too strict. I would say yours counts, like fine line but you stopped, left your transport and had a meal. Airport stops where you haven't left the airport don't count

I disagree. Getting off the bus, spending some time there and eating a meal absolutely counts. Airport stop overs don’t

For me, visiting a country means that you planned a trip there, and explored. Any airport connections on the way there don't count.
