I also went to Exeter and in Fresher’s week every time someone asked me my school and I said my comprehensive they’d literally turn and walk away! That was also the late 90s 😭

i got asked the "what school did you go to" question and i thought the exact same as you! was so confused why they knew so many schools or why they'd expect to know mine - took me a good two years to figure out what they actually meant 😂

My daughter has a very similar story when she went to Edinburgh University. She felt very self conscious of herself and the snobbery was palpable. She got there through hard work at a state school and is 32 now and has written her own book on social class and being a writer. It's called Bread alone if anyone is interested. Little plug for my girl 👏 👏

Another important point is having no stress or worry! they don’t have to worry about part time jobs, holidays coming up, applying loans filling paperworks on time, preparations. They don’t have stress at all. i have heard those students even have like agents who pick/select universities and prepare everything for them and vice versa 😅

You’ve done ‘really well for yourself’ because you’ve kept stepping out of your comfort zone and built yourself a life that your mum might only have dreamed of - and that you are happy in. That’s the most important part. Good for you. I bet your mum is super proud of you 😍

I have a well paid job at a company where the majority of people have masters degrees, but I got no GCSEs as my parents moved me to a different country during my mocks and I left home at 16 with nothing and no quals. Had to drag myself through night school etc etc. I spent most of my career feeling inferior. Don’t. Everyone has someone ‘better’ than them. Even the very rich there is always someone richer. It’s a terrible mindset to feel inferior. You’re not, you’re an equal, with a degree from the same place as them. Not one person at my work would know I didn’t get my GCSEs and I don’t tell them. None of their business, I am there on my merits and an equal.

i used to live on a council estate but I was so ashamed when anyone asked where I lived, I'd say near to... and then name the 'posh' area nearby 😂. However, growing up being poor has taught me so many skills. I can budget, I know the importance of working for the things you want and I treat people the same, regardless of where they're from. Well done for what YOU have achieved though ❤️

I can relate. I came from a working class background and ended up at a Russell Gorup uni. Meeting people whose parents had spent tens of thousands each year to send them to school spun me. I had never met anyone from a private school 😂

I had to work part time alongside my studies otherwise I had very little money while my flatmates just sat and played Xbox or watched TV all day.. it sucked 😂

I went to Exeter as well 😭 lived with a girl who ran the horse riding club. Got a blank stare when I said I’ve always wanted to ride a horse.

While money and more opportunity would of been nice, I would not give up my background for the world, we deffo see the world differently and more realistically can think more critically, and I think it deffo gives us an edge of not giving up, wanting more, being more resilient and being tougher 🥰
