@dr.nicolefein: If you have an itchy dog… you’re not alone 😅 Skin issues are one of the most common things we see, and one of the most frustrating because it’s rarely just one simple cause. A few key takeaways: • It’s not always just “allergies” • Most allergies are environmental (not food) • Allergy testing can be misleading if used incorrectly • Food allergy testing ≠ reliable → diet trial is the gold standard • Treatment is usually multimodal • This is often lifelong management, not a quick fix The goal isn’t just to stop the itch temporarily, it’s to figure out what’s driving it and build a plan that actually keeps your dog comfortable long term. If your dog is struggling, definitely loop your vet in early. These cases almost always need guidance and follow up. Drop your questions below ⬇️ I’m happy to cover more specific scenarios in future videos. #Itchydog #veterinarian #veterinarydermatology #atopicdermatitis #thefeinvet

My mister was allergic to chicken. The vet said chicken was the number one. When did beef become#1? 🥩

Legitimately I need at least 45 minutes in the room with my clients (GP) to fully discuss allergies and the seemingly endless approaches to managing them. I am lucky to have a dermatologist within a half hour drive to refer to…but very rarely will the clients actually take the referral :( I am getting to a point where I think I need to start gathering data from our practice manager about the average amount spent by clients on apoquel, cytopoint, ear cytologies, skin cytologies, sprays, otomax…just to show clients that the amount they spend with the GP is actually more than if they had taken the consult 😭 it’s also hard when I explain to clients that I am not the type of vet that is comfortable keeping a pet on Apoquel long-term, but they don’t have the same motivation because the Apoquel is quick and easy.

If I use a medicated shampoo for my dogs itchiness, do I need to use a medicated conditioner as well or a conditioner at all?

I am looking into getting a English golden retriever but I have heard cancer runs really high in retrievers. Would love your opinion.

I spent years trying to figure out all of my boys allergies. Turned out he was allergic to being a dog. 😅 Allergic to multiple pollens and grass. He is also allergic to a lot of foods. Took several trials to find a food he could eat and not get sick or break out on. Spot and Tango food and cytopoint have been his saviors.

So not an itchy dog, but she constantly licks EVERYTHING, like compulsively. Her sister, her paws, the couch, the carpet, the floor, bed, pillows. The only time she’s not licking is when she sleeps or eats. Vet has no answers. She’s a beagle-shi-tzu-chihuahua mix

Beets, sweet potatoes and all fish (but not shellfish 🤣) for our baby, plus he’s allergic to almost everything outside, most bugs, and has a thyroid issue that causes dry skin and hair. He’s a hot mess but we have a routine that works, but it take dedication for sure!

I work in vet med, and I have a senior cat with food allergies. Improved drastically during a food trial (hx of generalized pruritis and chronic ear infections). She hasn’t had an ear infection since we started her food trial and then switched from RC Ultamino to RC HP after a successful 12 weeks of Ultamino ONLY. She’s upset she doesn’t get treats, but she’s still the happiest 12 year-old girl. 💕

I had a shih tzu that was allergic to grass. I didn't even know a dog could be allergic to grass until him. I loved him so much but I'll never get another shih tzu, keeping them properly groomed is expensive

we were told today that my cat (16 months old) has a low grade heart murmur. they didn’t recommend we do anything further and will check it again in 6 months, is there anything you would recommend we do? they didn’t give a grade for it but said it was low grade. thanks :)

My sweet Lab had seasonal allergies and she got shots. It helped some but it still wasn’t great. This was over a decade ago. Thankfully veterinary medicine had advanced since then. 💕
