Saying “I’m going to drink a glass of water” and doing it may seem trivial, but it’s a low-stakes way to practice a positive feedback loop in your brain. What happens: 1. You engage your prefrontal cortex: this strengthens your ability to follow through on intentional actions. Over time, you will enhance executive function, improving your capacity for self-regulation and goal-directed behaviour. 2. You reinforce neural pathways through repetition: repeatedly following through on verbalized intentions builds stronger neural pathways, making it easier to align your actions with your goals, cultivating self-trust. 3. You’re releasing dopamine: completing a stated action, even a small one like drinking water, triggers a small release of dopamine in the brain’s reward system. You’re creating a positive feedback loop that is based in the completion of tasks. 4. You’re reducing cognitive dissonance: when you’re not aligning with your values and desires/not doing what you want to do, you will experience cognitive dissonance. Doing the thing you say you’re going to do starts to dissolve that. 5. It promotes mindfulness and habit formation: this practice encourages you to stay in the present moment while building a habit of following through with what you want. Each success reinforces your brain’s trust in your words, making it easier to tackle bigger tasks like “I’m going to exercise for 20 minutes” or “I’m going to finish this project.” Over time, this builds a sense of integrity and reliability within yourself. Cultivate self-efficacy in the easiest way you can. Need help with the application of this practice? DM me. #selftalk #trainyourbrain #neuroplasticity #youcandoit #tuesdaytips
