Ruby Bridges was the sole Black student enrolled at William Frantz Elementary, and her first day of first grade required a federal escort. While the world watched the "New Orleans school integration crisis," Ruby was just trying to get to class. She spent the year in total isolation; because of the white parent boycott and faculty walkouts, she and her teacher, Barbara Henry, were often the only two people in the entire wing of the building. The harassment was relentless. Mobs held up black dolls in coffins, and Ruby was forced to bring her own lunch every day for fear of being poisoned. Despite the terror and the toll it took on her family, she never missed a single day.
