@tatyanaaboutart: All about the painting that inspired Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator.’ Artwork: ‘Pollice Verso,’ by Jean-Léon Gérôme, 1872, Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona The quotes from Douglas Wick and Ridley Scott in this video are cited from Tim Brinkhof’s 2024 Artnet article on the topic. #arttiktok #gladiators #arthistory #HistoryTime #ancientrome
I mean its a great painting but i wonder if the painter could have done a bit more with it. Something like the winning gladiator not standing triumphantly but more introspective would have maybe said something more interesting about the cost of being a gladiator in those times. For me, it currently looks like a very very well crafted cliché. But he is the origin of that cliché so idk

You can also trace inspiration from the movie Barrabás, where the freed criminal from the Christ passiom story goes his way and becomes a gladiator. in the end he repents and turn to Christianity.

By the way, very few gladiators actually died in the arena. It was extremely violent, but if they always died, the financial investment of the owners of gladiators would be wasted. They were expensive to train, feed and equip.
