I got married and literally nothing changed? Idk we are both neurodivergent, feminists, sociology minded, and extremely emotionally intelligent! Marriage is literally a social construct..we just rely on mutual respect and understanding of one another..pretty simple🥰

My vows included things like “until this relation neither serves either of us”

People spend more thought and effort planning the wedding than planning the marriage.

I have never ever wanted to be married, not even when I was a little girl. I always thought there was something wrong with me, now that I'm 47 I'm incredibly grateful I am single.

Love that you’re talking about this. As a divorce lawyer 23+ years, it is also an actual contract. This is why we need prenuptial agreements - to change the terms. A marriage ends at death and at divorce and you agree to the terms your state gives you when you get married.

This is the most accurate description of my marriage and divorce that I have ever seen. I wish someone had explained this to me when I was young. Do not enter a partnership based on assumptions! You should be united on roles and responsibilities, and talk through how to manage changes, before you say yes!

These conversations can actually be had in a prenuptial agreement. And I believe we need to rebrand the prenup.

I tell so many people that marriage is a business. You have to be pragmatic about things and love is apart of it but like you say, the contract sustains it!

Holly Haeseler :
Another wrench in this plan is, even if you DO outline a fantastic prenup, it only serves the versions of you at drafting. People change so much over years and decades, and the couples that “last” are lucky enough to have changed in much the same ways, or at least complementary ways. The unforeseeability of how this will go down is one of the scariest parts of the contract.

Even if you have that convo at the beginning of the relationship about terms, shared goals & what you’re building, life happens. And having that negotiation at the beginning of the relationship or even when getting engaged is the wrong timing because it’s still in the romanticized stage. Easy to agree with lots of things when you start out. Then you start experiencing the implications of that contract and it’s not what you imagined.
