@cinder_peach: What do you think about this? Why are so many adults interested in collecting toys now? Why do you personally collect toys or plushies or dolls? #creatorsearchinsights #toys #toycollector #dollcollector #trinkets
Comfort is a luxury we can't find. Previous generations were able to get houses, jobs, vacations, and little luxuries like a fancy car or a vacation house or something of the like. We don't have any of that. Affording any of the luxuries they had is impossible. It's cheaper and easier to get a Monster High doll than it is to buy a fancy purse, anything Prada, or a trip to Disneyland. We're infantalized and hopeless, so we just turn to the things that once brought us joy as kids... because that was the last time we knew a stable world.

Not too found of toy companies calling us kidults tbh. Maybe I’m just sensitive tho bc being called childish is a soft spot for me.

the 2008 economic collapse left a lot of us not being able to get the toys we wanted as kids and being able to get them as adults is nice

I think having phones and the internet makes us desire permanence. I love when things i love last forever and will reliably be there for me no matter how bad of a day at work i had.

why is no one mentioning industrialization. like branded toys being as widely available and widely produced as they are now has been a thing for less than 100 years. barbie didn't even come out until the 60s, and didn't become widely popular until like the 90s. most toys / brands that are now childhood nostalgia or whatever came out during the 80s. my grandparents didn't have barbies or pokemon or hot wheels growing up. my mom did collect cabagge patch kids dolls up until i was born, she had matching dolls for her wedding.

I think comfort is a huge part! I’ve been saying this for years that we need to play more. Thank you for this! I started my toy account to connect and be nostalgic with company 💕

Definitely doesn’t help that toys are so expensive now that kids can’t afford to get them with their pocket money anymore. Like as a kid I could save up for a couple of weeks and get a new doll or Lego set, I can barely afford them now let alone if I only got a couple of quid a weekend

My personal theory is that in the past, people would eventually replace the excitement or happiness brought to them by toys with more adult things like buying a home, buying a new car, having a kid, getting a promotion / pay rise at work, but most people entering adulthood now don't have those options. A lot of younger adults can't afford or access a vast majority of that stuff, but they CAN afford and access an action figure, a doll, a pack of trading cards, etc.

Dolls have always been a big comfort for me as a little undiagnosed girl with no friends carrying around a Barbie made me feel less lonely, it also has to do with dolls being tied with a lot of girl media which is also a source of comfort for me

I think for me personally another thing is just that kids toys now aren’t good, I mean they all look the same and are cheaply made so of course kids aren’t bothered not buying them (I don’t blame them)

Years of my parents going "do you have toy money?" every time I asked for something that cost more than $5. My first purchase when I moved out was my first Tamagotchi.

I didn’t get a lot of new toys as a kid, always thrift store used toys with missing pieces and parts. I didn’t like this when I realized. I was also told at one Christmas at eleven to stop getting Barbie dolls. Mulan was one of the last dolls I had…

Marketing became A LOT more effective in the 90s and shaped our consuming habits as adults. On top of that, some of us are buying the things we really wanted as kids but our parents couldn’t afford or just never understood how much we wanted them.

we see more! Back in the day if id only seen barbie in the stores id probably only own a couple. But finding something more to your own interests is so much easier now. Maybe im a weird collector but I feel really uncomfy posting pictures of my collection. Maybe its still some shame

I've gotten older but my love for American Girl dolls hasn't changed and it makes me very happy. The internet helps and the stigma is slowly going away.
