weight doesn't matter if you can't keep good form

I keep it at 6-8. If I do 6 it’s good, 7 is a maybe. If the second set also makes it to 7, that means I could do 8 and increase weight but my mind is limiting me. I’ll go up 2.5 or 5 lbs depending on how the weight felt.

It actually does not matter much if failure is at 8 reps or 10 reps. as long as you are continually making sure you are training to failure on your last rep and doing progressive overload. (in case anyone in the comments feels that 10 is more simplistic for them)

because I'm slow... one set of 8 reps and no more than one set?

this is almost exactly mike mentzers approach to progressive overload. he also lived by his own "one warm up set. one to failure set at your max weight to get 8 reps"

I wanna go to the gym but I can't currently afford a gym membership nor gym appropriate clothes 😭 So rn all I'm doing is using the dumbbells I have at home and going for walks

*cries since my gym pin can’t be loaded any further for the hip abductor so I’m stuck doing 25+ reps at 315lbs* 😭

Sounds like a good strategy. What is the difference between that and trying to build to 12 and then increasing the weight?

Proof of this concep working was the Lat pulldown, kept finishing at the first sign of mild discomfort. Now it's probably one of my strongest lifts, I can always feel my lats on it now as a result.

I often do what you are suggesting, but the new ACSM guidelines say trying to failure is not necessary for optimal progress.

I aim for 8-12 reps and up the weight when I can consistently hit 12+ reps, but if you like going heavier and doing less reps then all power to you! Find what you like and feels good for your body!!!

I feel like rep ranges instead of “8 reps” helps a ton too
