I wanted my time alone after school. I wanted to eat snacks and lay on the couch. School was sensory overload and if my parent had been right in my face I might have lost it.

My mom got us through the baby and toddler stage and then lost all interest. Now she needs a retirement plan so she shows interest sometimes

You know, when I’m working from home and my 3rd grader comes home, I’ll say hi with my full attention and then I have to get back to work. My middle and high schoolers go right up to their rooms and decompress and do homework. Idk am I doing something wrong?

So many layers to why most of us don’t/didn’t truly understand what it would take to be a good parent. Adapting and developing those skills should be the goal.

I hear what you’re saying with “that’s what you signed up for,” but for many of us, what we thought would be our village or support system

For those who feels this is cold or unhelpful- it may not be gentle or what YOU need to hear right now but so may kids really need someone to be way more real with their parents. Many parents DO need help recognizing the reality that their kids needs aren’t going away and help to recognize and accept that maybe they aren’t actually keen on being parents- but they ARE now, and will be forever, so what kind of life do they want to offer the humans THEY created? So many parents realize they don’t wanna be, after the fact. I have a lot of compassion for that experience and I don’t know the perfect way to help them- and the kids super duper need their parents to have a reality check.

It blew my mind during Covid having friends who were SHOCKED at having to be around their children full time. Like, how did you become a parent without at any point considering that as a possibility?

Yes and, … some of us became parents and then the world turned instantly to 💩. These aren’t the conditions we signed up for. But yes, look at the deficits and start planning for success.

Says to me you have no clue how most kids are raised. I’ve been a peds nurse for almost 20yrs and it is shocking at times. Whatever help or advice works to engage parents is what matters!
