Ruby has very low friction while being good at holding onto oil.

Doesn't explain why ruby though.

Is this why they call them “jeweled movements”?

the most elegant thing in my opinion from the dawn of time is the watch, and I might as well be looking at the human brain cause I have 0 clue what is going on in there.

Why did it specifically have to be RUBY thought? Ruby is just the red variety of corundum so why would the color matter? Is it for aesthetics as well as function? Or is ruby specifically cheaper to source and produce?

Watchmakers use SYNTHETIC rubies, which are very cheap to make. They are used because they are only 1 below diamonds on the hardness scale, so having them in the pivots reduces friction and wear.

I wonder if you can use any corundum.

A ruby is extremely heat resistant, it has nothing else to do with protecting the gears towards shock, its just for heat due to all the friction taking place

the video tries to make a good reason why the ruby is there but the reason is not convincing it says it's because it's absorbs shocks but metal is pretty good way to absorb shocks and it's just over engineering way to make watches more expensive

During my watch repairs I’ve managed to send that clip that holds down the rubies into outer space multiple times never to be found again very hard to set😂
