Its builder was Khalif Niyaz-kul, a wealthy 19th-century merchant from Bukhara who came from a Turkmen merchant family and amassed a huge fortune. Legend has it that he had four daughters, and to honor them as well as fulfill his religious duty, he funded the construction of this madrasah in 1807, naming it "Chor Minor" (meaning "Four Minarets") to symbolize his four daughters, hoping their names would live on forever with this building. Another version of the story says that he traveled to India, was deeply impressed by the Taj Mahal, and wanted to leave a similarly unique architectural legacy in his hometown of Bukhara—thus giving birth to this four-minaret gatehouse.
