idk I think that since the NDP in Canada is trying to divorce itself from socialism he would respond by saying a U.S. based critique would not apply in a Canadian context.

1930s Germany was anticapitalist so by the logic you used it was leftist. They were certainly socialist but not leftist.

So I think where this gets messy: he's a Canadian subject who is still under the monarchy. Capitalism is the dominant system, but Canada is so backwards as to still be under a monarchy, so he is just reflecting that backwardness.

so is this why there's confusion about leftism all over the place. it's it own subcategory not related to conservative - liberal/ Authoritarian - libertarian axis. so for the sake of understanding. if socialism were the dominant structure and capitalist launched a revolte then would they be the leftists at the moment?

I generally agree with the sentiment however, I think anti capitalism is a wrong characterization, because it legitimizes anti revolutionary imperial core tendencies like anti communist communism (eg Trotskyism), anarchism, """democratic socialism""", etc. I think a better way to describe leftism is through the concept of Marxist "historically progressive". Not through social progress like LGBT rights, but through the development of productive forces. If you take this position, then you don't fall for traps such as the blind worship of "the masses" (eg we need to overthrow Maduro/etc because the masses demand it). You also position yourself correctly on the imperialism front, instead of debating whether Russia or Iran are imperialist, you have to acknowledge how the imperialist world system under develops countries and even if you don't like Iran, you position yourself with it to promote the development of productive forces against western imperialism. A similar situation happens with Taiwan, where you might morally align with independence movements but the progressive historical imperative demands you side with the one china position against the destruction of China. Also, this de-prioritizes fighting tooth and nail for meager concessions for scraps from the ruling class in the imperial core (shocking example: healthcare) and instead fight for things that are specifically in line with developing productive forces (anti financialization, anti imperialism, anti luddism, etc). I feel it positions you correctly on many topics. It also positions you correctly on the topic of whether china is socialist or not, basically concluding that it doesn't matter because it's historically progressive. What do you think? 🥰

this logic is fallacious because it means the left will always become it's own opponent. if the left achieves it's goal then it can no longer be the left because it will be the dominant system which means it's opposition becomes the left.

“Leftist” has a specific meaning in use, as in it is a so called “anti-capitalist” position opposed to the dominant system yet not actually Marxist/socialist or communist in any kind of rigorous way. This is why most “leftists” in the US are reactionaries who just want to wield the state to pass the laws that THEY want (usually redistribution, taxing of (((the rich))) etc. etc.) rather than actual revolutionaries who want to abolish the state and transform the social order.
