Space is dark because it is a near-perfect vacuum, meaning it lacks matter (like air molecules) for sunlight to scatter off. While the Sun shines brightly, its light travels in straight lines; without an atmosphere or dust to reflect that light in all directions, the vast, empty space around us appears black.  Why Earth is Light and Space is Not When sunlight hits Earth's atmosphere, it hits trillions of air molecules (nitrogen and oxygen), causing the light to bounce around and illuminate the surroundings. Without this "scattering," the sky—even during the day—would appear black, just as it does to astronauts looking from the moon.

On Earth, our atmosphere’s molecules and particles bounce sunlight in all directions (Rayleigh scattering), filling the sky with blue light and making the ground bright. In vacuum, with no air or dust, light travels in straight lines and doesn’t get redirected; you only see it when it comes directly from the Sun or reflects off an object, so the background stays dark. We get daylight because sunlight reaches Earth’s surface and atmosphere, where scattering and reflection illuminate everything we see.
