Lake Hillier 🇦🇺 This lake looks like someone spilled paint into the ocean. And almost nobody knows it actually exists. Sitting on a remote island off Western Australia. Surrounded by nothing but eucalyptus forest and the Southern Ocean. The colour isn’t a filter. It’s not edited. It’s genuinely bubble gum pink. And here’s the part that breaks your brain: the water stays pink even when you bottle it and take it home. 🔬 Why It’s Pink Scientists only figured this out recently. In 2015, researchers sailed out to the island and took DNA samples from the water. They found a whole community of organisms that shouldn’t exist. Dunaliella salina algae. Halophilic bacteria. Microbes that thrive in conditions that would kill almost anything else. These extremophiles produce carotenoids. The same pigment that makes carrots orange and flamingos pink. Except here, it turns an entire lake into something that looks photoshopped. The lake is about as salty as the Dead Sea. Nothing can survive in it except these tiny colour-producing organisms. They’ve been doing their thing here for thousands of years. 🏝️ Middle Island Lake Hillier sits on Middle Island. The largest island in the Recherche Archipelago. 105 islands scattered across the Southern Ocean that almost nobody visits. The island has one freshwater source. Dense paperbark and eucalyptus forest. And a history darker than you’d expect. In the 1830s, a pirate called Black Jack Anderson used Middle Island as his hideout. Australia’s only known resident pirate. He ran a crew of escaped convicts and sealers, raiding ships passing through the archipelago. He was eventually murdered by his own men. Buried somewhere on this island. Nobody knows where. The old railway tracks from 19th century salt mining operations are still visible. Rusted and overgrown. Evidence of people who tried to harvest the lake and failed. 📍 Where It Is 130 kilometres off the coast of Esperance. Western Australia. No roads lead here. The island is completely uninhabited. Part of a protected nature reserve. You can’t just show up. ✈️ How To See It Scenic flight from Esperance. About 1 hour 40 minutes round trip. You fly over Lucky Bay first. Certified by Geoscience Australia as having the whitest sand in Australia. Kangaroos lying on beaches. Turquoise water so clear you can see sharks and rays from the air. Then out across the archipelago. Islands scattered like fragments. The coastline of Cape Le Grand National Park dropping away. And then you see it. Pink against green against blue. Colours that shouldn’t exist next to each other. From the air it looks solid. Like a pool of paint sitting in the middle of the forest. Flights run October to April. Cost around $425 AUD. Weather dependent. Between July and October you might see whales migrating along the coast below. 🏊 Can You Swim In It? Technically yes. The water is safe. The organisms are harmless to humans. But the island is a protected nature reserve. Special permits only. Research purposes. So you can see it. But you probably can’t touch it. 🌍 Why This One Is Different There are pink lakes all over the world. Senegal. Mexico. Spain. Even other parts of Australia. Most of them change colour with the seasons. Temperature shifts. Rainfall dilutes the salt. The pink fades. Lake Hillier was famous for staying pink year-round. Then in 2022, unprecedented rainfall hit the region. Climate change pushing weather patterns sideways. The freshwater diluted the lake’s salt content and the colour faded. It’s recovering. Scientists say the pink will return as the water evaporates and salinity climbs back up. But nobody can say exactly when… ⏱️ Best Time To Go October through April for flights. July through September for the Coral Coast wildflower season if you’re driving through Western Australia. Morning flights usually have the best light. Midday sun makes the colours pop hardest.
