Or they get a ride from someone else and then you get a notification something is wrong and have to go back. How many times does a person do field work and everything goes perfectly on every farm. Not often, so how often will a person have to babysit the technology so much it’s a job in itself.

For the amount of work I have to do to set up employees and the amount they tear up. Autonomy sounds pretty decent. I’m already moving equipment to make sure there is a truck in the field so the operator can have an out if needed

I think we will end up with 50 hp or smaller sized machines. Haul 10 into a field have one guy sit and watch them. Everything probably be electric. 10 4 row machines running 24 hrs a day could cover a lot of ground and probably wouldn’t cost anymore than a new 24 row planter and tractor

Is an autonomous tractor so much less expensive over time than paying a guy to sit in a cab all day long?

It’s not for central iowa. You don’t have to go very far north (Dakotas) and find farmers with 30,000 acres a lot of big fields. Very similar to x9s they all go north.

How about guys in areas where they farm 3000 acres where there biggest field is 40 acres? How does any of this automation pay period?

think equipment can not just keep getting bigger. think maybe 24 row planter and tractor pulling sprayer. you manage both with each having some autonomous ability. managing logistics instead of a single field operation. I enjoy operating equipment but this equipment is well a lot. maybe I am wrong but when big equipment goes down that means a lot of work is not getting done. not sure bigger is best. autonomous could be part of the solution.

I understand like a disk they can put sensors on the shafts to see if it’s plugged up. Now a field cultivator plugs up how do they do that.

only thing autonomous that gets me excited would be an autonomous semi hauling grain

My question is for the places that have lots of rocks, sticks and deer antlers. How good is this autonomous equipment going to be at detecting that and stopping the tractor and then the tractor is now stopped because there’s a rock in the way or an antler. Secondly, the amount of logistics move all of that equipment is going to be far greater because now you still have to have two people in order to move a piece of equipment.

Well, basically now the machines driving itself if you have everything set up with turn automation you’re just there making sure nothing goes wrong and fix any problems that do come up

do you guys not farm stuff closer together than that? The best fit I see is running a ripper in the fall somewhat close to the harvest operation. Ripping an 80 would take most of a day. Start it in the morning and let it go. Not going to fit everywhere right away but certainly has a fit.

You are exactly right. But, a lot of people are not talking about the cost of it either it’s a fee through Deere. I’m pretty sure it costs 10 grand to run per year

I talked to a kid at the University of Nebraska awhile back and there plan is to go more/ smaller autonomous equipment. so you could set up day 3 fields with 50 foot sprayers and just tend to the 3. it would keep equipment affordable and maximize coverage.

From someone who’s not a fan of it either, it’s not going to be for everyone but will work for a lot. Treat it like you would a 10 year old driver. Yes you’ll have to set it up and get it going, maybe check on it every few hours, but will run when you’re not there. Where I’m at in America, the average farmed field is a 1 mile X 1 mile square field 100+ miles in every direction.

do your research. they're designing them to self drive to the field too. the day you think you're important and smarter than the tech thats coming is the day you're a fool. farmers have been seat weights on the prototypes for years. you're the next thing to get replaced. but your ego keeps making you think you're important.

i saw a podcast if you could get a smaller tractor and planter and run it 24/7 just keep it fueled and full of seed. could have multiple setups in different fields.
