I find it interesting to hear people argue that BTS's English songs don't sound like them, when it's precisely these same songs that made them so famous by reaching an international audience. Suddenly you want Hanbok and traditional Korean instruments so you can see they're returning to their roots, lol. Everything they do, regardless of the project, is and always will be part of their identity, no matter what anyone says. This album included. They're the ones telling you who they are and what they represent, not the other way around. Just because you were hoping for something specific that only you have in mind doesn't mean they're going to do things the way you want them to. And just because a minority didn't like the album doesn't mean the album isn't good. Appreciation is subjective. But reality differs from subjective opinions. It's perfectly normal not to like an album. Actually , I don't know of any BTS album that hasn't been criticized repeatedly for the same reasons over the years. But it's not the opinions and personal views of a few that determine the true quality of a production, since, once again, the numbers are proving the opposite, as has always been the case.

I prefer when they sing in Korean, despite not understanding all of the lyrics. I do feel they express themselves better. For me, the worst song was FYA. I really don’t like it, and don’t understand it. I love BTS and I will stand by them, but I don’t have to like everything they do.

The shallowness is what really got me too. Part of what drew me to BTS was their lyrics, whether deep or fun. In songs like The Truth Untold, you have a story. In Converse High, you have a side plot of Hobi taking Joon’s girl. In Ma City, you have all the members appreciating their hometowns. Even the production is different. Each of the main 3 members that produce all have a pretty distinct style to their production. You can kinda take a good guess at which member took the lead with production. But with this, it just feels like no distinct sound could really get its foot through the door, idk.

Thank you for doing this 🙂↕️🙂↕️to the “sounds like rm” point, I really agree but more than that I noticed a real lack of Suga in the mix. Like jhopes sound was a little bit there, but sugas lyrics and sound felt like it was missing to me 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️

army from debut 2 Cool 4 Skool—this newest album just disappoints me. like it’s got okay songs—for the American charts. but i stopped loving bts when they stopped making music because they love it and starting making music for American charts.

I think you hit the nail on the head with „they killed the brand“. They’ve been cultivating their particular brand for over a decade and while it’s of course totally fine to want to change course, doing so requires really strong brand stewardship, including some honest expectation management — which they simply didn’t deliver. I think the reception of this album would have been wildly different, had it been marketed more honestly and titled more aptly (although the general criticism of the low-quality writing and the badly employed AAVE would of course still stand).

It really threw me off when I started reading the lyrics to each song. it felt like Arirang as a concept was forgotten in the whirlwind of being a group again and learning each other after seperation. I'd argue they've done the concept of showing their roots better in older songs like Ma City or Daechwita And the AAVE being missused was irritating

I know there were a ton of hands in the pot with this album but I just don’t understand why they have no cultural advisors, or if the writers want them to fail with the broken/misused English and AAVE. I LOVE the beat for Hooligan but the lyrics take me ouuuut.

the thing you said about switching genres each song reminds me of Golden where each song sounds like a song from a top 10 chart but it never felt like an *album* to me. maybe they're trying to hit as many playlists as possible

As someone who’s been following them since debut…RM’s arrogance and dominance has always been a problem. I see that this is what happened with this album, he pushed through a vision that wasn’t consistent. I could tell right away from when Jimin said he didn’t want Swim to be the lead single
