So to everyone who’s anti mail-in voting: What’s it like going through TSA at the airport? Do you enjoy the long lines and how miserable it is just to get through security? Now imagine that, but 100× worse because everyone would have to stand in line for hours just to vote. The government already struggles to manage TSA lines, and during government shutdowns they can’t even reliably pay TSA workers. Now imagine trying to run nationwide, in person only voting at that scale. It’s just not realistic. The government simply doesn’t have the capacity to manage lines like that everywhere. A lot of people wouldn’t be able to vote. And don’t even get me started on strict ID restrictions. It just makes the process harder for people who are already trying to participate. Voting should be accessible, not harder than catching a flight.

It puts the burden on the populace to prove what the government already knows with documents that the government already has. The government is not so incompetent that if you give them your name, address, and SSN that they can’t figure out who you are and if you can vote.
