Ad Every winter in Lerwick, Shetland, around 1,000 flaming torches cut through the darkness as locals parade through the streets before burning a replica Viking longship. This is Up Helly Aa - one of Europe’s most dramatic midwinter festivals. @Promote Shetland @VisitScotland 🏴 Though inspired by Shetland’s Norse heritage (the islands were settled by Vikings over 1,000 years ago), Up Helly Aa itself is a modern tradition, emerging in the late 1800s. Earlier winter celebrations were wild and chaotic, but over time they evolved into the highly organized torchlit procession seen today - complete with Viking costumes (guizers), music, dancing, and the ceremonial leader known as the Guizer Jarl. The festival marks the end of winter’s darkness, blending history, community, and spectacle. While the Viking imagery feels ancient, this is a living tradition that continues to evolve, including becoming more inclusive in recent years. When: - Lerwick Up Helly Aa takes place on the last Tuesday of January - Smaller Up Helly Aa festivals happen across Shetland from January to March 📍 Where: Lerwick, Shetland Islands, Scotland 🚢 How to get there: - Fly from mainland Scotland (Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow) - Or sail overnight with Northlink ferries from Aberdeen (Winter crossings can be rough - but unforgettable) Tips if you go: - Book accommodation months in advance - Dress for cold, wind, and rain - Respect local customs, this is a community festival first - Stay for the all-night celebrations if you can #Scotland #uphellyaa #shetland #historytok
