Jícama comes from Mexico and Central America. It’s native to that region and has been grown there for thousands of years. The plant itself is called Pachyrhizus erosus, a type of climbing legume (same family as beans). The edible part is the big, round root underground. Historically, jícama was widely cultivated by indigenous cultures in places like Mexico long before Europeans arrived. Today, it’s still a staple in Mexican cuisine—especially eaten raw with chili, lime, and salt.
