I made my own gesso using matt white PVA paint, PVA glue (wood glue), mixed with slaked lime, zinc oxide, and a tiny bit of clay (minute); I know it's not the same as authentic gesso, but it worked for me. I can't remember the ratios, it was long ago. I spent weeks experimenting with different ratios and found what was right for me. Then, I would: lay down two thin coats and let dry (8-16 hours), then lightly (but evenly) sand with 200 grit sandpaper, wipe clean (to remove dust), paint two coats perpendicular to the previous coats. After each pair of coats, I would increase the grit of the sand paper, and repeat, eventually getting to 800 grit; about 6 to 8 layers, depending on what I was looking for. This would create a smooth, almost glass-like finish which was ideal for my style (hyperrealism). I painted on wood panel, not canvas.

I did an underpainting using red paint, but after the painting was completed and dried for a week or so, I applied a spray varnish. To my surprise, the red paint from the underpainting had transferred to the main painting, which was a bit confusing for me.
