When was the last time you had no idea what you wanted from your life, and no idea about how to go on? It might be the end of a relationship, or you have lost a job, or as you leave home. But when was the last time that you thought, 'what do I actually want from this life?' Kierkegaard argued that most people, most of the time, move along like characters in a choreographed dance. We are puppets, jigging along to somebody else’s tune. And this tune is eerily familiar: Go to school, get a job, find a partner, get a home, retire, and then wait around to die. It is as if there is only one way to live. Kierkegaard was aware that we do this because it is easier. It is easier to be ‘like others, to be an imitation, a number, a cipher in the crowd.’ It is easier to go along with somebody else’s plan than to make your own. If you let go of your parents’ hand, who will hold you up? If no one is telling you what to do, what will you do first? When we are presented with the sheer vastness of our own power to choose, we are often crippled by anxiety. We do not know how to go on. Kierkegaard leaves us with no easy answers. He says either we are a puppet, dancing to somebody else’s choreographed tune, or we are crippled by this anxiety. But he does leave us with a question. Would you rather live your life tethered safely to the shore and doing what other people are doing, or would you rather cast off into the great unknown, powered by your own winds?
