I didn’t know any of this! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Uruguay is an amazing place to live! Though no country is perfect, there are many pros to moving this far south. Still, there were a few things I wish I was better prepared for 👇 💰 If I would have googled it I would have seen Uruguay is called “the Switzerland of Latinoamérica” because of the higher cost of living. Porque claro, living so far south it takes more resources importing goods. The USD doesn’t go far here, and costs can be comparable to NYC or Miami prices 📦 that brings me to mail! Trying to ship a package here is next to impossible, and be prepared to wait 1-3 months for it! Where we live in La Barra, homes don’t even have addresses, just names 😅 Things have to be mailed to a third party shipping office and we pick it up 🧂 okay this is probably better for us anyway, but Uruguay doesn’t use salt. In fact, salt shakers are banned in schools and you usually have to ask in restaurants. Uruguay’s had high levels of hypertension and sodium consumption, so this ban is to help its population with their health. Crazy how a government can help its citizens health with policies that protect them.… ⏰ there is little to no rush here. Restaurants usually close in the middle of the day for un descanso (at least where we live in La Barra) and reopen late (6-8PM). Dinner is later than we’re used to, very similar to European culture 🫶 How trusting and chill Uruguayans are! I was not prepared how genuinely nice people are. We went to a store where the card reader was down and they told me to take it and I’ll pay them when I can. WHAT! 😮 the US would never 😂 and to be fair, this happened in the capital as well as our little beach town. La gente te saluda con “buenas” y una sonrisa. It’s very refreshing Overall, we really love and appreciate the Uruguayan people and culture. Uruguay keeps surprising us with its warmth and beauty and I hope you get the chance to experience this amazing country 🇺🇾 Follow @casabolanos for more on living in Uruguay 🇺🇾 - Uruguay, Move abroad, living abroad, nomad family, #uruguay #moveabroad #livingabroadlife #lifeabroad #nomadfamily
